Preparing for Your Appointment

At Michigan Joint Replacement Institute, your comfort and convenience are our priorities. To ensure a seamless experience during your visit, please remember to bring the following items:

Should you need to cancel your appointment, we kindly ask that you contact our office during business hours and provide at least 24 hours’ notice. This allows us to accommodate other patients on our waiting list. While we strive to maintain punctual appointments, unforeseen emergencies or patient needs may occasionally cause delays. We appreciate your understanding and apologize for any inconvenience if we keep you waiting. Your time is valuable, and we’re committed to ensuring your experience with us is as efficient and respectful as possible.

Post-Operative Care

At Michigan Joint Replacement Institute (MJRI), your journey to full recovery extends beyond the operating room. Following your procedure, your doctor will provide tailored postoperative instructions to ensure optimal healing and comfort. Here are some essential guidelines applicable to most surgeries:

  • Adhere to prescribed pain-relieving and other medications, taking them with food as directed. After the initial 48 hours, use pain medication only as needed.
  • Refrain from alcohol consumption, driving, operating machinery, or making legal decisions for the first 24 hours following surgery, as sedative and anesthesia effects may linger.
  • Manage swelling with ice packs, ensuring they don’t leak into dressings. Use ice liberally for the first 48 hours and beyond if necessary.
  • Respect activity restrictions to prevent discomfort. Rest and elevate the operated limb above heart level to control swelling.
  • Maintain clean, dry dressings to facilitate wound healing.
  • Initiate physical therapy within days of surgery, focusing initially on joint motion and progressing to strengthening exercises. Consistent exercises are vital for a successful outcome.
  • Nourish your body with a healthy diet and ample non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids.
  • Arrange your follow-up appointment as advised by your doctor.
  • Increased drainage or redness around the incision
  • Persistent swelling unaffected by ice and elevation
  • Foul odor or fever exceeding 101°F
  • Coldness, numbness, or unusual discoloration in fingers or toes
  • Sudden calf pain, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort
Your well-being is our priority at MJRI, and we're here to support you every step of the way on your road to recovery.
