Knee Arthroscopy

Understanding Knee Arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, offers precise insights into the inner workings of your knee using a specialized instrument called an arthroscope. This small, flexible tool is equipped with a camera, allowing our surgeons at Michigan Joint Replacement Institute (MJRI) to assess and treat knee issues through tiny incisions.

When is Knee Arthroscopy Recommended?

This procedure serves two primary purposes:

  1. Repair or Removal of Damaged Structures: Knee arthroscopy addresses issues like torn cartilage or meniscus, loose cartilage or bone fragments, torn ligaments, and joint infections.
  2. Diagnostic Assessment: In some cases, knee arthroscopy helps confirm diagnoses and evaluate the condition of knee structures.

Patients experiencing symptoms such as catching, locking, swelling, or persistent localized pain in the knee may benefit from knee arthroscopy. Additionally, ligament reconstruction procedures can be performed using arthroscopic techniques, enhancing precision and minimizing recovery time.

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery

Upon admission to the hospital day-surgery unit, your surgeon will mark the affected knee, and an anaesthetist will discuss anesthesia options. In the operating room, the arthroscope is inserted through one incision while surgical instruments are introduced through another. After completion, your knee receives a local anesthetic injection, and incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape.

Recovery and Aftercare

Following surgery, you’ll wake up in the recovery ward, where you’ll receive guidance on walking safely and home exercises from a physiotherapist or nurse. It’s crucial to ice the knee regularly and follow prescribed exercises to minimize swelling and regain mobility. Detailed post-operative instructions will be provided, including information on bandage care, weight-bearing, pain management, and follow-up appointments.

At MJRI, we’re committed to ensuring your comfort and facilitating a smooth recovery journey after knee arthroscopy. If you have any concerns or questions during your recovery, our team is here to support you every step of the way.
